BIO
From an early age of 10 years, Shridhar Barve started training under the guidance of Late Shri. Ramchandra Phadke, Nanora Goa and Bhalchandra Tatkar, Pernem Goa. His interest and dedication in Tabla was quickly evident and prompted his father Late Shri. K.N Barve (a State awardee writer and Indian Classical Music Analyst) to enroll him for further studies in Tabla under the then famous Goan Tabla player Late Shri. Parismam Kamulkar.
Shri. Parismam gave Shridhar the required technical know hows and helped build a strong theoretical and fundamental base. Later when stationed in Belgaum, he had the opportunity to take the guidance of Late Shri. Narayanrao Chikodikar for some time. After returning to Goa, Shri. Barve took discipleship under Late Shri. Prabhakar Chari. His training in Tabla was simultaneously in process with regular school studies.
Shri. Barve had the opportunity of his life when he met renowned theatre artist and harmonium player Late Shri. Sakharambapu Barve. He advised him to go to mumbai and take guidance from Shri.Pandharinath Nageshkar. Shridhar took guidance for a short duration in Mumbai and returned to Goa as his schooling was going on in Goa. Meanwhile Kala Academy Goa started music classes on a full time basis. Shridhar grabbed this opportunity and enrolled himself to Kala Academy music classes and took further lessons from known tabla maestro Shri. Yeshwantrao Kerkar. A Guru like Yeshwantrao Kerkar helped Shridhar gain deep knowledge about the Tabla as a instrument as well as a accompaniment. 2 years of tutoring helped him acquire technical knowledge in Ajarada, Lucknow, Delhi, Farrokhabad facets of Tabla playing. Concurrently Shridhar had completed his graduation from St. Xaviers College, Mapusa. He joined the well known banking firm "Canara Bank" and served for 27 years before taking a voluntary retirement. Post retirement, he dedicated his time to enhance his Tabla skills and become a "Gandabandh Shishya" of Late Shri. Pandharinath Nageshkar (who he had seeked guidance from in his early learning days in Mumbai). This is kind of a Threaded devotion towards the Guru and involves a sadhana under the Guru's mentorship. 6 years of sadhana by Shridhar made him a more evolved tabla player enhancing his Solo performance skills.
Shridhar was already a known name and one of the few who got guidance from the stalwarts of the art of playing Tabla. He then performed at various sangeet sammelans in Goa which included "Shri. Kesarbai Kerkar sammelan", "Samrat Sangeet Samaroh", "Aavishkar Sammelan", "Yeshwantrao Kerkar Smruti Sammelan", "NaadBrahma Panaji" and "SwarManch Madgaon".
He also had the distinction of recording a video series "Introduction to Tabla" at Goa University Studio for the Distance Education Program funded by the Central Government of India.
He has also contributed to the literary cause by writing 3 books on tabla one each in Konkani, English and Marathi.
His book "Tabale" in Konkani won the State award for the best book in the Cultural section. He further translated the book into English "Tabla Made Easy", especially keeping in mind the music enthusiasts who have limited knowledge of the devnagari script and were unable to get full understanding of the subject. This book was published by the "Art & Culture department of Goa" and was published at the hands of the then Cultural Minister Shri. Dayanand Mandrekar.
He then ventured into translating the book into Marathi on suggestions of his friend, renowned Vocalist Shri. Prabhakar Karekar on the grounds that Marathi had a wider reach.
Shridhar then came up with a unique idea of drafting and texting a local household language used in Chitpaavan Brahmin families of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka - Chitpaavani. His book on the language received great appreciation and has been in demand from all over the world including countries like USA, UK and Singapore.
Shridhar is in general a very calm and composed person and has friendly relations with his colleagues, friends and well wishers. He is frequent newspaper columnist putting out his views on social matters.
